The National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh (NHRC) has urged the government to take necessary measures to ensure people are receiving proper medical care, which is one of the basic rights, amid the coronavirus outbreak in the country.
The commission sent a letter to the Cabinet Secretary, Cabinet Division in this regard on Thursday.
In the letter, NHRC said there are reports in the media that various public and private hospitals are refusing to treat patients despite the government’s directives to continue giving treatment to everyone.
Rifat, a school student suffering from liver cirrhosis died after being refused admission by four different healthcare centres including Khulna Medical College Hospital.
There are also many cases reported in the media where people suffering from respiratory distress, asthma, common cold or fever, are being declined medical care.
NHRC has termed all these incidents as an extreme violation of human rights and asked the government to ensure medical care for everyone in the country.
