Parts of a street in Dhaka’s Green Road area collapsed shortly after a heavy downpour in the morning.
A 20-foot stretch of a street in Jahanara Garden Residential Area caved in around 6:45am on Monday.
Fire Service Headquarters Duty Officer Ataur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune: “Our team is at the spot. No casualty has been reported.”
Officials from Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) and the city corporation are visiting the spot, he added.
Jahanara Garden Welfare Association President Tutu Saidullah told the Dhaka tribune: “Some 400 families live here. This road is the only entry and exit point of the residential area.
Regarding a gas leak, he said the authorities fixed the lines which were leaking after the collapse.
Blaming Akankha Developers Ltd, Tutu said: “The developers made the slab while working on the piling of a building in the area, which led to the formation of cracks on the road.
“Rainwater entered the cracks on account of which the road collapsed.”
He claimed that the developer did not take any initiative to protect the road, in spite of repeated requests.
On the other hand, local residents said workers of Akankha Developers Ltd dumped sacks filled with clay in cracked parts to save the road.
However, the workers refused to make comments regarding the matter.
Offficials of the developer company were not present on the spot.
