Prisoners in Bangladesh can now communicate with their family members once a week via telephone.
A top level official of jail confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday.
Until now, only prisoners of Tangail jail enjoyed the service but from Tuesday, prisoners of 67 jails across the country will able avail the service.
Due to outbreak of coronavirus, Department of Prisons took a number of decisions on Monday and the phone call service was one of them.
Every jail in the country has set up a new telephone booth so that prisoners can communicate with their family member once a week, jail sources said.
According to jail sources, prisoners can use telephone service from 9am to 12pm and from 1pm to 4pm.
Sources also said, the new prisoners will be under observation up to 14 days to prevent Covid-19 in prison.
Apart from this, the jail authority has arranged one quarantine centre in every division for prisoners.
In addition, hand sanitizers were distributef to every prison.
Jail authority also suspended all types of vacation of jail staff during the coronavirus lockdown.
On Tuesday, Inspector Genera (IG)l of Prisons Brig Gen AKM Mustafa Kamal Pasha told Dhaka Tribune they were working to make prisons safe from Covid-19.
“We have taken measures to protect prisoners from Covid-19,” he said.
