Update : 19 Mar 2020, 09:08 PM

The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) has ordered all bars around the country to remain shut until March 31, in another government initiative to prevent the deadly coronavirus from spreading further.

The DNC issued a notice, signed by its Deputy Director (Admin) Mohammad Mamun on behalf of the director general, in this regard on Thursday.

It said all the bars in hotels, restaurants and clubs across the country will have to stay closed till March 31 in light of the coronavirus situation.

The notice added that the department, which is under the Home Ministry’s Security Services Division, will issue further directives later depending on the situation at that time.

So far, since the beginning of March, Bangladesh has recorded 17 Covid-19 cases, three of which were confirmed on Thursday.

Of the 17, three were earlier released upon recovery, while one died on Wednesday.

The government recently also closed all educational institutions around the country, while owners shut down cinema halls to join the efforts to curb coronavirus spread.

The Covid-19 pandemic, since it started from China’s Wuhan city in late December last year, has so far infected over 228,600 people and killed more than 9,300 in 176 countries and territories around the world, according to worldometer.
