A case has been filed against journalist Mahbub Alam Lavlu on the allegation of spreading false and defamatory news through his YouTube channel.
Ashiqur Rahman, a resident of Hosni Dalan Road in Dhaka, filed the case against him with Chawk Bazar police station under the Digital Security Act 2018 on Thursday.
Chawk Bazar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Inspector Moudut Hawlader confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Saturday night.
Lavlu, who worked at Independent Television as a senior reporter, uploaded news-related videos on his personal youtube channel, which included reports on expelled Jubo Mohila League leader Shamima Noor Papia, coronavirus, and Nagad, the digital financial service of Bangladesh Post Office.
According to the case statement, Lavlu used his youtube channel and Facebook page named "Shuddho Sotto," to spread aggressive, false, and defamatory information against important persons of the state in a bid to damage their image along with the country.
Besides, the plaintiff also alleged that Lavlu has been involved with the illegal online casino business in Bangladesh.
“We are investigating the case,” OC Moudut said.
