A motorcyclist was killed and his passenger injured when a passenger bus crashed into them at Dhaka’s Jatrabari area.

The accident took place at Matuail’s Mridha Bari area, under Jatrabari police station, at 12pm on Monday.

The victim was identified as Md Imon Sarkar, 24, a second-year HSC student at Bangladesh Open University. A pillion rider, Md Ashik, 22, was also injured in the accident.

Confirming the incident to Dhaka Tribune, Sub-Inspector Farjana Akhtar said a Dhaka-bound bus of “Modern Paribahan” was speeding on the highway when the motorcycle was coming from the opposite direction.

“At one point, the motorcycle slipped on a coconut shell lying on the road, and fell under the wheels of the bus,” she said.

Later, locals took the two to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where on-duty doctors declared Imon dead on arrival. Ashik has been undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The police official also said the respective bus has been detained, but the driver fled the scene.

The body of the deceased was handed over to his family members.
