Shakhawat Hossain Shawkat, the newly-elected Awami League-backed councillor of Ward number 23 of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) who reportedly beat up a policeman on Monday night, has been arrested and jailed.
Among others arrested over the incident in Khilgaon was his son.
Khilgaon police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moshiur Rahman said the councillor and his men clashed with Special Branch of police Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdul Majid in front of Khilgaon Pallima Club around 8:30pm.
Later, SI Majid filed a case naming Shakhawat, his son, and six others along with a few unnamed people, accusing them of obstruction of justice and attacking police, added Moshiur.
"We have arrested the eight accused, including Shakhawat and his son, and produced them in court. However we did not ask for any remand," the OC said.
Sources said that SI Majid and a policeman were passing through Khilgaon on a motorcycle on official duty. At one point, a vehicle carrying the councillor and his associates collided with the motorcycle.
When Majid protested, Shakhawat’s supporters verbally abused the two policemen and even resorted to violence, sources added.
On Tuesday, the investigation officer (IO) of the case produced the eight, including Shakhawat, before the chief metropolitan magistrate’s court. At the time, the IO requested to hold him in jail until the investigation was completed.
On the other hand, Shakhawat’s lawyer appealed for bail.
Following the hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury rejected the bail petition and sent them to jail.
