Revenue earnings from the local market by the country’s IT-ITES industry has increased to Tk1,927 crore in six years, according to a first-ever national level research.
The research titled “IT-ITES Industry Statistics of Bangladesh 2019,” conducted by Leveraging ICT for Growth, Employment and Governance (LICT) Project of Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) under the ICT Division in collaboration with Centre for Project Management and Information System (PMIS) of Dhaka University, was released in last December.
According to the research, total local market revenue of the IT-ITES industry that covered three areas -software, business process outsourcing (BPO) and e-commerce - has increased to Tk1,927 crore in 2018 against Tk1,397 crore in 2013 showing an increase of Tk530 crore, reports BSS.
ICT Secretary NM Zeaul Alam said the statistics on local market revenue of the IT-ITES industry unveiled through the research study showed a positive trend of growth of the industry as well as growing demand of IT products domestically.
"There was no national level research on the country’s IT-ITES sector and ICT Division with the help of PMIS of DU conducted first-ever national level survey for the sector," he said, adding that a deeper understanding of the industry dynamics will enable the policymakers to select appropriate policy measures that would ensure accelerated growth of the industry.
Detailed data on various aspects including local market revenue, export, HR profile and perception and preparation toward the fourth industrial revolution was collected through a structured questionnaire from a sample of 378 companies and firms, said the research.
BCC Executive Director Parthapratim Deb said the government will continue to provide policy support based on the findings of the research to give a boost to the IT-ITES sector and expand local market. The aim of the research is to generate some key industry statistics so that the proper policy can be crafted, interventions strategized and institutions built, he added.
Director General of Digital Security Agency and LICT Project Director Md Rezaul Karim said the government is encouraging the local IT-ITES industry to produce secured and reliable IT products to expand the local markets.
“But the IT-ITES industry will have to lay emphasis on quality and secured products to grab the local markets,” he added.
