Dhaka reaffirms commitment to effective, functional D-8

D-8 Summit to be held in Dhaka in early 2020

Bangladesh has reiterated its commitment to a more effective and functional D-8, realizing its full potential.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam conveyed Bangladesh’s position when Secretary General of the D-8 Ambassador Jaafar Ku Shaari met him at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on Tuesday, reports UNB.

The D-8 secretary general briefed the state minister about the upcoming 10th Summit to be held in Dhaka early next year, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Shahriar also emphasized how to better collaborate among the member states by leveraging experiences and skills of member states for others on complimentary  basis, especially in the field of energy, tourism, and blue economy.

D-8, also known as Developing-8, is an organization for development cooperation among the following countries -- Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.

Jaafar  also briefed Shahriar about the various initiatives undertaken by the D8, particularly in the field of technology and innovation, universal health care services, in the newly established Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and establishing FIZs (D8 Free Industrial Zones).

D-8 was established in 1997 and its first  Summit was held in Istanbul. Bangladesh hosted the second D-8 Summit in 1999.
