3 held with 2,246 mobile phones at Dhaka airport

Estimated value of the phone sets is around Tk3.5 crore

Members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) have detained three people for smuggling 2,246 mobile phone sets into the country at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

“The mobile phone sets were being smuggled into Bangladesh from China. The estimated value of the goods is around Tk3.5 crore,” said Alamgir Hossain Shimul, additional superintendent (ops and media) of APBn. 

The detainees are Md Sujon, 49, Shahriar Hossain Prince, 33, and Md Rofiqul Islam, 27. They were held from the canopy area of the airport around 8am on Saturday after they arrived in the country on a US Bangla Airlines flight.

During primary interrogation, they confessed to bringing the mobile phone sets from Guangzhou area in China to be sold in Bangladesh, and that they have been involved in smuggling for many years, the official added.

A case was filed with Airport police station in this regard.
