Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) has detained a couple with 30 pieces of gold bars, worth Tk1.75 crore, from the Jatrabari area in the capital.
The detained are Nirmol Saha and his wife Taposhi Saha.
CIID Assistant Director (AD) Abdullah Al Mamun, while confirming the news to Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday, said: “We had prior information that a couple was travelling from Feni to Dhaka with gold bars, in a Star Line Paribahan bus.
“According to the information, CIID members took position at different points in Jatrabari on Wednesday morning.”
“At one stage, they saw a couple getting off the bus. During questioning, the couple admitted having gold bars with them,” he added.
The CIID officials also said: “After the couple was brought back to the CIID office, both of them were searched. Later, 30 pieces of gold bars were found on Taposhi inside the waistband of the clothes she was wearing.”
The bars weigh around 3.5Kgs, the official added.
“During the primary interrogation, we found that they have been transporting gold for a long time.
“They used to receive information over the phone and then collect the gold from Feni Sadar from the gold smugglers. After collecting the gold, they would transport the gold to Dhaka for money,” (AD) Mamun said.
“We are investigating further and will take legal action against them,” he added.
