Quader to mayors: Inform people about dengue initiatives

Ministries and city corporations have to take decision jointly to contain dengue menace

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has asked the ministers concerned and the two mayors of Dhaka city to inform people about initiatives they have taken to prevent dengue disease.

"Ministries and city corporations have to take decision jointly in this regard. And let people know about initiatives you have taken to contain dengue," he said.

Obaidul Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said this while inaugurating an anti-dengue campaign at Shantinagar in Dhaka on Sunday.

Dengue, a mosquito-borne virus, spreads among humans through its carrier, the Aedes mosquito. Currently, the entire country is reeling from the dengue menace.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) data showed that 21,235 people were hospitalized with dengue infection since January 1. Of them, 18,842 patients were admitted to hospitals since July 2.

According to the government data, 18 people died of the disease while the unofficial data says more or less 50 people died.

In another context, while addressing the campaign, Quader also recalled the August 15 carnage.

He urged the Awami League leaders and activists to remain vigilant so that evil forces cannot create anarchy in this month.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon, former minister and Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon, Awami League Joint General Secretary Abdur Rahman, among others, were present at the program.
