The Detective Branch (DB) of police has arrested 40 suspected dope gang members in Dhaka over the last 24-hours.

"DB South Division detained 19 members of the dope gang, DB West Division held seven members, and Serious Crime Division arrested 14 members during the raids in different areas of the capital," said Additional Commissioner of Detective Branch, Abdul Baten at a press briefing on Thursday.

Police also seized tranquilizer, date, halwa and juice from their possession.

The additional commissioner said: "Dope gangs are not new in Bangladesh. The gang members target people at shopping malls, cattle markets, bus stands, launch terminals and railway stations.

They use different techniques to rob people, who are carrying more money ahead of Eid."

He requested everyone not to consume any food or drink from strangers, and added: “Most of the dope gang cases are filed by police, and usually the gang members get bail due to lack of witness. Proper witnesses can hold them longer in jail, and prevent such incidents from happening.”
