Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Javed Patwary has said that police are suspecting domestic militant groups may be involved in planting two ‘bomb-like objects’ at Paltan intersection, and Khamarbari’s Bangabandhu Chattar in Dhaka.

"Although it is very early in the investigation to confirm, we are working so as to get to the bottom of the matter," he said while speaking to the media at the police headquarters in Dhaka, on Wednesday.

It is yet to be confirmed as to how strong the bomb-like objects were, Patwary said. "We will know after conducting forensic, and DNA tests."

Earlier, police disposed of two ‘bomb-like objects’ at Paltan intersection, and Khamarbari’s Bangabandhu Chattar.

On late Tuesday, Paltan police called in the bomb disposal unit after a mysterious bomb-like object was found at Paltan intersection.

“At around 11pm, a bomb-like object was found inside a carton box, near the police box at Paltan intersection. Soon, the bomb disposal unit arrived at the scene, and neutralized the object,” Shahbagh Police Station OC Abul Hasan told Dhaka Tribune.

On the early hours of Wednesday, a similar object was found near Bangabandhu Chattar of Khamarbari at around 1:30am.

“On information that a bomb-like object has been found near the intersection, we quickly cordoned off the area, and called in the bomb-disposal unit. Later, the object was neutralized,” said Tejgaon Police Station OC Md Shamim-or-Rashid Talukdar.

Police said the items recovered will undergo forensic tests to determine whether it was an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) or a hoax.

A senior police official has told Dhaka Tribune that it will be investigated to check whether the incidents are connected to any conspiracies against the state.

Police have filed two cases in connection with the incident.
