Update : 19 Jul 2019, 01:32 PM

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Friday said the government was doing everything necessary to prevent the spread of dengue and chikungunya, two major mosquito-borne diseases.

“"Everything we need to do to prevent dengue and chikungunya is being done," he said while addressing a rally arranged by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), aimed at raising awareness about the diseases, in Manik Mia Avenue, Dhaka.

He said the government had adopted several preventive measures to control the spread of the diseases, and they would continue to enforce those measures.

It is possible to control the spread of the deadly diseases if Aedes mosquitoes, the carrier of dengue and chikungunya, are destroyed, the home minister said, adding that the government was doing everything necessary to do so.

He also stressed the importance of raising awareness among the people about these diseases, saying Aedes mosquitoes can be destroyed completely if everyone keeps their surroundings clean.

Councillors of different wards under the DNCC and city dwellers joined the rally with colourful balloons, banners and placards.

In an announcement, DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam confirmed that the DNCC authorities had cancelled the leave of all staff working in mosquito killing and waste management to prevent the spread of dengue and chikungunya in the city.

“I have cancelled leave of all staff in the health and waste management department. They will have to perform their duty even during the holidays for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. Everyone must work together to control Aedes mosquito population," he added.

He also urged people to keep their household and surroundings clean to stop the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.

Renowned film actors Ferdous and Riaz, cricket all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz, former captain Akram Khan and other celebrities joined the rally as well.
