Poribesh Bachao Andolon (Poba) speakers have urged the government to ensure a more environment-friendly budget, stating that no development effort will be effective if it ruins the ecological, and environmental balance.

Poba speakers said this in a public meeting at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Saturday, reports UNB.

The speakers said development and environment are complementary to each other, and real development lies in the protection of the environment.

The chief guest, MP Rezaul Karim Bablu, said: “The environment must be protected for the survival of people. No development will be effective if it damages the environment.”

While underscoring the need for strict enforcement of law to prevent the use of polythene, he said: “Although the production of polythene was banned in 2008, yet 265,000 thousand metric tons of polythene are being produced currently.”

The MP also lamented that the fertility of land is being destroyed through rampant use of pesticides.

Poba President Abu Naser Khan said, only structural development is not safe enough for the people and the nature.

Another speaker, Dhaka University Professor Shafik Uz Zaman also said, the country needs to plan development projects while considering the environmental aspects.
