State minister: Corrupt Milk Vita officials to be punished

The minister also warned private dairy farms about irregularities

Stern action will be taken against corrupt Milk Vita officials and engineers, to stop irregularities at the state-owned milk production company, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Swapan Bhattacharjee has said.

The state minister made the remark while addressing the press at Milk Vita's special general meeting and management committee election at Dhugdha Bhaban in Dhaka on Tuesday, reports UNB.

Recognizing the irregularities at Milk Vita, Swapan said: "Corruption has stalled the growth of cooperatives in Bangladesh."

Sounding a warning for private dairy farms, the state minister added: "Strong action will be taken against those private dairy farms who evade taxes."

Swapan alsoi asked Milk Vita management to infuse dynamism into its marketing department, and come up with plans to minimise losses.

Rural Development and Cooperatives Division Secretary Md Kamal Uddin Talukder said: "Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman set up Milk Vita to meet the nutritional demands of the country's poor people.

"We want to develop our local sectors so that we do not have to import milk anymore."
