Demonstrators protest Nusrat's murder at Shahbagh

A procession left Shahbagh intersection on Friday morning and ended an hour later at the Shaheed Minar

Demonstrators have formed a procession, at Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka, protesting Feni's Sonagazi Madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi's murder. 

The procession, under the banner of "Gaurab 71," started out from the intersection around 11am Friday, and ended at the Shaheed Minar an hour later. 

Earlier, around 10am, the protestors formed a human chain in front of the National Museum. 

They expressed their outrage at the vicious attack on Feni student Nusrat. The girl was set on fire by reported supporters of madrasa principal Md Sirjaddaula on April 6 after she filed a case against him, accusing him of trying to rape her on March 27.

Nusrat died on Wednesday night at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) from the burn injuries she sustained in  the attack.

Demonstrators demanded the death penalty for those behind the attack.

Dhaka University (DU) Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof Md Samad, DU Associate Professor of Mass Communication and Journalism Department, Robaet Ferdous, an organizer of Ganajagaran Mancha, FM Shahin, Sammilita Sangskritik Jote President, Golam Kuddus, and others spoke at the demonstrations.

Shahbag's protests are a part of the nationwide demonstrations that have continued since Nusrat's death, seeking justice for her murder, including a human chain formed at a Tangail intersection, on Friday morning.

Till now, police have arrested 11 people, including main accused Md Sirajaddaula and his student, Nuruddin, in connection with the murder.
