Students of Dhaka University (DU) Law Faculty, has formed a human-chain and demanded justice against culprits responsible for setting fire to madrasa student, Nusrat Jahan of Sonagazi upazila in Feni.
Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) VP, Nurul Haque Nur with Social Services Secretary, Akhter Hossain expressed their solidarity with them at the Central Shaheed Minar premises on Wednesday.
VP Nur said: “Sexual harassments are happening more frequently these days. Now, time has come to speak up and put an end to this.”
He urged concerned authorities to ensure exemplary punishment of the culprits involved with the incident.
Mahmudul Hasan Nayon, brother of Nusrat, pressed for immediate trial of the culprits involved.
Later, a procession was brought out, which paraded the key streets of the campus and ended at the premises of Raju Memorial Sculpture.
Earlier on Saturday, Nusrat was set on fire for refusing to withdraw a case filed against, Maulana Siraj Ud Doula, principal of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa, for sexually harassing her last month.
The student was battling for her life at the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and finally succumbed to her injuries tonight.
According to her family, four burqa-clad students called her to the institute’s roof and asked her to withdraw the case that her family had filed against the principal, for allegedly trying to rape her.
The unidentified students poured kerosene on her and set her on fire after she refused.
Other students rescued her upon hearing her screams and took her to Sonagazi Upazila Health complex with the help of police. From there, she was moved to Feni General Hospital, and later transferred to DMCH.
Later on Wednesday night, Nusrat died at DMCH.
