He added that efforts to build a modern market was thwarted by legal complications

Update : 30 Mar 2019, 10:02 AM

Visiting the scene of the devastating fire, which gutted Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) market in Gulshan 1, Mayor Atiqul Islam revealed no fire suppression system was installed there.

He made the comment while visiting the scene of the incident around 8:10am on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters, the DNCC mayor said: “When this market caught fire on January 3, 2017, there was no fire suppression system installed, and as history repeated itself, the market still did not have that system.

“We wanted to build a permanent DNCC market in this spot, but legal complications delayed the process. We will make a serious effort to resolve the legal issues and build a permanent DNCC market, which would feature a modern fire suppression system and other amenities.”

He further said: “The city corporation will launch its scrutiny to ensure that all markets, shops and shopping centres have fire suppression systems installed.

“We will take legal action against shop owners and their associations if evidence of negligence is found in this matter.”
