Update : 12 Mar 2019, 01:44 PM

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Akhteruzzaman has said it is not possible to hold the Dhaka University Central Student Union (Ducsu) re-election.

“Ducsu election was held as per rules and regulations. It is not possible to hold re-election,” he said on Tuesday afternoon.

He said: “The students have given their mandate and it is not possible to make another decision about re-election based on anyone’s demand.”

Students have boycotted classes at Dhaka University (DU) amid protests being carried out by major panels who participated in the Ducsu polls.

Earlier in the day, the Dhaka Tribune reporter visited the TSC intersection at the university and witnessed the general students holding a demonstration, not attending classes.

Quota reform movement leader Nurul Haq Nur was elected Vice-President of Ducsu in Monday’s elections while Bangladesh Chhatra League General Secretary Golam Rabbani won the post of general secretary of Ducsu, and Saddam Hussain won the post of assistant general secretary post. Eight of nine secretary posts went to candidates from the Chhatra League panel.

Opposition panels and students are holding a sit-in demonstration at the TSC intersection of Dhaka University (DU), rejecting the election results of the Ducsu election.

Students were chanting slogans demanding Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman's resignation from his position as the university’s vice-chancellor, and that Ducsu re-election be held.

Meanwhile, Chhatra League members have gathered near the vice-chancellor's residence, protesting the results of the election.
