Police are working to bring the situation under control

Update : 12 Feb 2019, 11:39 AM

Slum dwellers have blocked the roads, protesting the eviction drive of the Bhashantek slums in Dhaka.

The protest took place on Tuesday.

According to locals and police, the tenants heard that the Public Works Department was planning to evict their slum, leading them to block the roads and begin their protest.

Meanwhile, there was no sign of any eviction drives when this correspondent visited the place around 11am.

Bhashantek police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Munshi Sabbir Ahmed told the Dhaka Tribune that at first, the slum dwellers were trying to form a human chain. But when all of them gathered there, they blocked the roads and began their demonstrations.

"However, the road is clear now. They still wanted to maintain a human chain, but we are talking to them about the matter to bring the situation under control," he said.
