The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a suspected member of banned militant outfit Ansar al-Islam, formerly known as Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), from the Sayednagar area in Vatara of Dhaka on Monday.

Md Borhan Uddin alias Prince, 32 is a recruiter, motivator, monthly fund-raiser and organizer of Ansar al-Islam, said RAB.

His arrest was based on information provided by two other militants who were arrested in two separate raids on November 26 and December 12.

In a press release, RAB said they got information that an operational cell of Ansar al-Islam had planned to destabilize the country with anti-state and destructive activities ahead of the parliamentary election on December 30.

RAB-3 arrested trainer Younuch alias Abdullah from the Kadamtali area in Dhaka on November 26 and active member Mohammad Abdul Ohab alias Mustafizur alias Hadid arrested from the South Keraniganj area on December 12.

According to the information extracted from these men, RAB-3 got to know of Borhan Uddin alias Prince, who lived in the Keraniganj area – was secretly organizing activities of Ansar al-Islam and was subsequently arrested from Vatara on Monday with two mobile phones in his possession, RAB added in a press release.

During the primary interrogation, Prince told RAB that he had been a supporter of the extreme organization "Jamaetul Muslimin" a Badda-centric organization in Dhaka since 2008.

In 2010 he joined Ansar al-Islam as a follower of the organization's spiritual leader Jasim Uddin Rahmani. After Jasim Uddin Rahmani’s arrest in 2013, Prince began secretly working for organizing Ansar al-Islam activities.

He later became responsible for the activities Ansar al-Islam (Ansarullah Bangla Team) for Dhaka’s Jurain area.
