The Left Democratic Alliance (LDA) has demanded that the upcoming general election be held under a neutral caretaker government.
The alliance, a new platform of several left-leaning parties, made the demand at a rally in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka on Sunday.
The alliance Coordinator, Saiful Huq, led the march.
“If the government does not accept our demand then we will announce our next program,” said alliance Coordinator Saiful Huq, also general secretary of Revolutionary Workers Party.
“Parliament needs to be dissolved before the schedule for the next general election is announced and a neutral polls-time government must be formed," said Md Shah Alam, general secretary of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB).
Gonosonhoti Andolon Chief Coordinator Zunayed Saki said there were many autocratic governments in the past but this government has crossed more limits than any other autocratic government.
“To get rid of this government there is no alternative to holding an election under a neutral caretaker government, he said.
The speakers also demanded scrapping of the Digital Security Act, saying that it seriously harms the freedom of expression of all anti-government parties.
Later, the alliance marched toward the Secretariat, to highlight their demands, but they were barred by police.
The LDA was formed on July 18 with the demands of formation of a neutral election-time government.
