The driver of a battery-driver auto-rickshaw has been killed after a bus crashed into his vehicle in Dhaka’s Meradia area, near Banasree residential area.
The incident took place on the slope of the Trimohoni Bridge around 8:30pm on Sunday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Monirul Islam, 18.
Khilgaon police station OC Moshiur Rahman said the Taranga Plus bus was torched by agitated locals soon after the incident while the bus driver managed to flee the scene.
“We are looking into the matter,” he added.
Khilgaon police's Sub-Inspector Nasir Uddin Tuhin said the bus had crashed into the auto-rickshaw, which was right behind, after the former’s engine broke down, while climbing the slope of the bridge, and started going backwards.
As the bus crushed the auto-rickshaw, Monirul was killed on the spot, he added.
He said the body was later sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Meanwhile, Fire Service and Civil Defence’s control room duty officer Mizanur Rahman said that the bus was set on fire around 9:25pm and fire-fighters doused the flames around 10:20pm.
However, there were no more casualties, he added.
