Student movements: Families demand release of arrested children

Saleha appealed to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as a mother herself, to release her son

Update : 17 Aug 2018, 06:24 PM

Families of students arrested during the quota reform and safer roads movements organized a human chain in front of the National Press Club on Friday, to demand the students’ immediate release.

They also called for the immediate release of photographer Shahidul Alam, and actress Nawshaba.

Saleha Begum, mother of quota reform movement joint convener Rashed Khan, broke into tears while speaking at the human chain program, reports UNB.

Rashed Khan was arrested from Bashantek, Mirpur in Dhaka on June 1, on two separate charges: one under the ICT Act and another for allegedly attacking the Dhaka University (DU) Vice Chancellor (VC)'s house. Saleha claimed her son is innocent.

Saleha appealed to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as a mother herself, to release her son and let him continue his studies, as he is innocent of the charges brought against him.

Shafiqul Islam, father of arrested student and quota movement leader from DU Tarikul Islam, demanded investigations into the allegations that have been brought against Tarikul, to prove his guilt or innocence.

Tarikul was arrested on July 2, in the case filed for vandalizing the DU VC's house.

Dipu, a student of Asia Pacific University, said students were attacked by a group of miscreants during their peaceful demonstrations for road safety, which left many injured.

However, the attackers have not been brought to book, while many student protesters have been arrested, he claimed.

Mahmudur Rahman Manna, convener of Nagorik Oikya, also spoke at the event, demanding immediate action against those who attacked students and journalists during the two movements.

Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Zafrullah Chowdhury, human rights activist Farida Akter, and academic Rezaur Rahman Lenin also spoke at the human chain programme, among others.
