Bangladesh Charushilpi Sangsad has installed a 43-foot portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman near the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) in Dhaka University (DU) to pay tribute to the father of the nation.

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed inaugurated the largest ever portrait made of Bangabandhu, as tall as a four-storey building, at the premises of TSC's Milon Chattar on Tuesday, marking the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of Bangabandhu and most of his family members.

With Bangladesh Charushilpi Sangsad President Jamal Ahmed in the chair, DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman, Sculptor Rabiul Hossain, Hasem Khan and Kamal Pasha Chowdhury were, among others, present at the event.

Speaking at the event, the commerce minister said: "When I was sitting here and looking at the portrait, it seemed like I was sitting in front Bangabandhu just as I did in 1971."

Sources said more than 150 painters took part making the portrait. The work started on August 1 at the TSC auditorium and swimming pool premises and was installed on Tuesday.

The height of the portrait has been set keeping in mind the 43rd death anniversary of the father of the nation. The main picture has been drawn in acrylic colours on the canvas. The artists drew different parts of the portrait in different frames, which were then joined together.

"The artists of Bangladesh have created this great piece of artwork utilizing their own talent, labour, and creativity," said Charushilpi Sangsad President Jamal Ahmed.
