Lalbagh Fire Inspector Nasrin Sultana told the Dhaka Tribune that the blast radius and debris conditions suggest a compressor in the shop may have exploded.
She said: "However, we will investigate and provide a concrete answer."
Resident Surgeon of the Burn and Plastic Surgery unit Partha Shangkar Paul said that four of the injured were in critical condition.
Of them, Abul Bashar, 45, suffered 80% burns; Farhana Akter Panna, 23, 24%; Sabuj, 20, 23%; Maruf Hossain, 22, 18%; Md Makbul Hossain, 35, 18%; Md Sabbir, 25, 15%; Sunam Uddin, 50, 15%; and another unidentified. Two more, Foysal and Abdullah, suffered minor scrapes and bruises in the blast.
Locals who rushed the injured to the hospital said that the burn victims were mostly pedestrians and street hawkers near the blast area.
Talking to the Dhaka Tribune, injured Sabbir said: “I was crossing the road in front of the sweets shop on a rickshaw when the explosion occurred. I cannot remember anything until I regained consciousness at the hospital.”An explosion, possibly caused by a gas cylinder, rocked the Chowrasta area in Lalbagh on Saturday.
Nine people suffered burn injuries in the incident which occurred in front of a sweets shop named Mithai around 5:30pm, said Lalbagh zone Deputy Commissioner Md Ibrahim Khan.
He said: “We suspect that the blast was the result of a gas cylinder explosion, but we cannot confirm this until a report is filed by the fire service units on site.”
Fire Service HQ Officer Mizanur Rahman said that three firefighting units had been sent to the location, but they had not yet discerned the cause of the explosion.
