Update : 09 Aug 2018, 10:37 PM

On Thursday, a student of Dhaka University (DU) was handed over to Shahbagh police by the university authorities, with the assistance of Bangladesh Chhatra League.

The student is accused of posting ‘derogatory’ statuses about the government, Awami League and Bangabandhu’s family on social media site Facebook.

The accused was identified as Rafsan Ahmed, a first year student of DU’s Institute of Education and Research (IER). Chhatra League leaders took him to the university proctor’s office from the ground floor of the DU Arts Building on Thursday afternoon.

IER Chhatra League President MR Mukul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune: "After seeing such derogatory statuses on Facebook, we asked him (Rafsan) why he had posted them. He replied that he was angry with the ruling party as well as its student wing. After hearing his answer, we informed the university proctor about the matter and took him to the proctor’s office as instructed."

DU Proctor Professor AKM Golam Rabbani said: "The student has been handed over to Shahbagh police station for interrogation under the ICT act."

Shahbagh police station Officer-in-Charge Abul Hasan confirmed that Rafsan had been handed over to them by the DU proctorial team.
