The CEO of an online news portal, and a Buet student, have been arrested on charges of publishing false news and stoking violence during the student movement for safer roads.
Zoombangla news’ CEO Yousuf Chowdhury, 40, and Daiyan Alam, 22, were arrested on Tuesday night, in Dhaka, in separate cases filed with Ramna police.
Mobile phones, computers, and laptops have been seized from them, police’s ADC Najmul Islam said.
Police say Daiyan played a role in transforming the student movement into a violent one through Facebook live, posts, and by sharing and commenting on various posts.
Zoombangla has been accused of yellow journalism. Police say the portal has been misleading the people by publishing fabricated news.
During the student movement, it incited violence by publishing “illogical and unrelated pictures” of police.
Police have sent them to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court seeking seven days, each, to interrogate them.
Thousands of students came out on the streets in Dhaka demanding safe road after two college students were killed by a speeding bus on July 29.
