Ruling Awami League-backed Blue Panel of Dhaka University (DU) teachers has won the university’s Syndicate elections in a landslide, bagging five out of six posts.
The last post of the highest decision-making body of DU has gone to the pro-BNP teachers’ White Panel.
To elect the teachers’ representatives in the Syndicate, Academic Council and Finance Committee of the university, the elections were held between 9am and 1pm on Thursday.
The Blue Panel also secured all six posts of the Academic Council and the only Finance Committee post.
DU Treasurer Prof Kamal Uddin, who was the chief election commissioner, announced the results around 3pm at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on the campus.
Out of 1,612 enlisted teachers, 1,418 had cast their votes.
The elected Syndicate members are Prof ASM Maksud Kamal (Provost Category), Prof Rahmat Ullah (Professor Category), Associate Prof Mohammad Humayun Kabir (Associate Professor Category), Assistant Prof Md Mizanur Rahaman (Assistant Professor Category), and Lecturer Jannatul Naima (Lecturer Category) from the Blue Panel, and Prof Md Hasanuzzaman (Dean Category) from the White Panel.
Hasanuzzaman, the dean of the Engineering and Technology Faculty, had beaten Social Science Faculty Dean Prof Sadeka Halim to win in his category.
The new Academic Council members are Alamgir Kabir, Nepal Chandra Roy and Mohammad Ashraf Sadek from Associate Professor Category, and Farzana Ahmed, Saiful Alam Chowdhury and Sanchita Guha from Assistant Professor Category.
Prof Momtaz Uddin Ahmed was elected to the Finance Committee.
After their victory, Prof Maksud Kamal told the Dhaka Tribune: “The Blue Panel’s landslide victory is the recognition of its role in the university’s Academic Development.”
“Teachers have faith on the Blue Panel and it has no alternative,” he said.
DU Syndicate consists of 17 members. Six among them are elected by all the teachers of the university as their representative.
