Awami League-backed panel wins DU registered graduate polls in landslide victory

Awami League-backed Gonotantrik Oikya Parishad won the registered graduate election for Dhaka University (DU) senate in a landslide victory. The panel bagged 24 seats out of 25 while the BNP-endorsed Jatiyatabadi Parishad got only one seat. DU Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Prof Nasreen Ahmad announced the result on Sunday at the university's Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate building. The elected candidates from the Ganatantrik Oikya Parishad are Md Ataur Rahman Pradhan, ASM Maksud Kamal, M Farid Uddin, ARM Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, SM Bahalul Majnun, Muhammad Abdus Samad, Zainat Huda, Asim Sarkar, M Iqbal Arsalan, Sadeka Halim, Mahfuza Khanam, Tazin Aziz Chowdhury, Emran Kabir Chowdhury, AHM Enamul Haque Chowdhury, Md Liaquat Hossain Morol, Md Alauddin, Syed Humayun Akter, Ramendu (Krishna) Majumdar, ABM Badruddoza, Nizam Chowdhury, Md Abdul Aziz, Mohammad Abdul Bari, Ranjit Kumar Saha and Md Nasir Uddin. Former DU pro-vice-chancellor AFM Yusuf Haider won the single seat from Jatiyatabadi Parishad panel. The winners will serve in the DU senate for the next three years. Some 22,642 votes were cast in the elections, which is 51.46% of the total number of voters. Some 1,260 votes were cancelled from the cast votes. The first two phases were held on January 6 and 13 outside Dhaka, while the third and final phase of the poll was held on Saturday in three centres of DU campus. The DU senate, the highest policy-making body of the university, consists of 105 members. Of them, 25 members are elected from registered graduate students.
