Update : 14 Jan 2018, 01:43 AM
The Awami League has started selling nomination papers for the upcoming by-election to the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). Haque Group's Managing Director Adam Tamizi Haque and poet Rasel Ashequi collected nomination papers from the ruling party president’s office in Dhaka's Dhanmondi on Saturday morning. Adam collected nomination paper around 11am and Russel around 11:30am, confirmed Awami League's Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap. Aspirants can collect nomination papers from January 13 to January 15 by depositing Tk25,000 in the party’s fund. The last date of submission is January 15. The DNCC by-polls will be held on February 26. The mayor’s post fell vacant on December 1 last year after the death of Annisul Huq, the first mayor of the DNCC. Annisul, a former FBCCI president, was backed by the ruling party in the 2015 polls. This year, another business leader, former BGMEA president Atiqul Islam, will likely join the fray. The ruling party will formally pick a candidate later after a meeting of its Local Government Nomination Board to be held at Awami League chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official residence, Ganabhaban. According to the Election Commission, January 18 is the last date for the submission of nomination papers. Anyone willing to pull out of the mayoral race will have to do so by January 29. The commission will also arrange polls for the 36 councillor posts and 12 reserved seats in the 36 new wards on February 26. According to the schedule, nomination papers will be scrutinized between January 21 and 22. The commission will allocate electoral symbols on January 30. The DNCC has some 2.95 million voters.
