Teachers and employees of educational institutions that do not enjoy the government's Monthly Pay Order (MPO) facilities have announced to begin to go on an indefinite hunger strike from Sunday.
They are pushing the government to meet a set of demands which include nationalisation of all non-MPO institutions and their inclusion in the MPO list.
Golam Mahmudunnabi Dollar, president of the Federation of Teachers and Employees of Non-MPO Educational Institutions, made the announcement on Friday.
More than 7,000 teachers and staff of these institutions are continuing their sit-in protest since Tuesday in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka.
“The authorities always give us assurance that they will take steps to include us in the MPO list, but we have seen their promise translate into reality. We held similar programmes multiple times in the past, but to no avail. Therefore, we have decided to go on a hunger strike from Sunday,” Dollar said. The article was first published on Bangla Tribune
