“All passengers left the bus in a hurry, as soon as they detected that smoke was coming out from the back of the bus,” Manik, one of the passengers, told the Dhaka Tribune. According to eyewitnesses, the bus was stuck in traffic near Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) when smoke started coming out from the gas cylinder. Passengers of the bus and other nearby vehicles left the place as soon as the smoke became visible. Later, a fire broke out and burnt the whole bus and which caused traffic jam until 1pm.

Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service South (Palashi Barrack) Abdul Halim said: “We are assuming the explosion has taken place due to a leakage of the gas cylinder. We have got phone call from national emergency service “999” at 12:07pm and reached the spot at 12:22pm.” “Fire is under control now. All the passengers remained safe,” he added. The traffic came under control after Shahbagh police station moved the burnt vehicle through a wrecker van.
