Book of condolence for Annisul Huq unveiled at Digital World 2017

A book of condolence commemorating late mayor of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Annisul Huq was unveiled at the Digital World 2017 tech expo, at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka. Visitors at the expo signed and wrote remarks in the book to mourn the passing of the beloved mayor. So far, hundreds of mourners have left a note in the condolence book since it was first opened for signing on December 6. On the last day of the four-day Digital World exposition, this Dhaka Tribune reporter found a large number of visitors of different ages, waiting in line to sign and write their remarks in the condolence book. The book was made available at the DNCC booth in the exposition.

Asif Rahman Saikat, ICT consultant for the DNCC, told the Dhaka Tribune that people of all ages and various professions, such as students, academics and members of civic society, have signed in the book. Saikat said: “Many people of the city are still in shock and deeply saddened by the mayor’s passing.” Annisul’s former rivals, who fought against him for the mayor’s office, also signed and commemorated his death, including Junaid Abdur Rahim Saki, leader of the People’s Solidarity Movement (Ganosamhati Andolon).

He wrote: “I participated in the DNCC polls against him [Annisul Huq], where he was a worthy opponent to me.” Md Parvez Miah of National Election Observation Council (JANIPOP) wrote that they would never face each other in polls but Annisul’s memories would remain with him. Communication Officer Nazrul Islam of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport wrote: “Dear honourable mayor, the people of this city will never forget you. Your dream for a better, female-friendly and habitable Dhaka will be built under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.” Furthermore, the people honoured Annisul Huq’s honest contributions for a green, clean and smart capital, and thanked him for inspiring to build a better Dhaka.
