An egg sale fair, to mark the World Egg Day, became fraught due to the heavy crowd on Friday.
The event was held at the Krishibid Institution of Bangladesh in Khamarbari area, near Farmgate in Dhaka. It was jointly organised by Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC) and the Department of Livestock Services.
Police have charged batons to control the crowd, reports Bangla Tribune.
Police have beaten, and detained a few people at the fair. Many buyers have blamed the organisers and administration for this incident while others have expressed their anger over not being able to buy eggs.
Many have come to the event from various places of the capital to buy eggs.
A resident of Jigatala, Mahidul Islam, said: "I came here after reading the newspaper advertisement. But instead of buying eggs, I was beaten by the police in the crowd. Did the organisers host the event to beat people?"
A resident of Mohakhali, Nazma Akhter, said: "I came [here] in the morning. But I did not get any eggs. Instead, I lost my mobile in the commotion. The organisers should be held accountable for such poor arrangements."
Meanwhile, even after egg sale has been halted, many are still waiting to buy eggs. Mahmud Alam said: "I faced so much trouble in coming here. So I'm waiting for the eggs sale to resume."
Thousands of people gathered at the venue in the morning. Organisers had to stop the sale due to the excessive congestion after the fair started around 9:30am.
The organisers said they brought around 100,000 eggs for the sale. They sold around 80,000 eggs in just half an hour.
BPICC President Mashiur Rahman said: "We will not call it [the fair] our failure; we have been successful."
He added: "We have received more response from the people compared to what we had expected. However, we had to discontinue the sale due to undesirable circumstances. We are sorry because of that."
Previously, the organisers announced that they would sell eggs at a special price of four for Tk12 to celebrate the World Egg Day.This article was first published on Bangla Tribune
