The event drew a huge crowd, all eager to ride the first water taxi service in Dhaka. Minister Kamal said: “In this city of concrete and steel, Hatirjheel is an oasis for the residents. I hope the new taxi service will make the lake and its surrounding areas more appealing to the urban residents.”
Minister of Home Affair Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal inaugurated the taxi service in the afternoon Dhaka Tribune“I urge Karim Group to be patient with the taxi service. The company might not make a profit in their first or second quarters, but the project will be profitable in the long-run,” he added.
As part of a large project, another set of water taxis are scheduled to be introduced to the Gulshan-Banani-Baridhara Lake very soon.
Each taxi costs around Tk85lakh and can carry 45 passengers. The fare is around Tk25-30 for a single trip, subject to future change.Also Read- Dhaka to get water taxi service
Although the water taxi project was supposed to be fully implemented by 2010, it was delayed several times. Finally, it began operating in December 2016 to meet the deadline set by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council.
