Update : 07 Nov 2014, 06:35 PM

Some landless indigenous people, namely Nelson Marak, Januti Marak and Kemol Marak, residents of Sonakhali village in Bhaluka upzaila, have recently been confident of tearing out the cycle of poverty by dint of the project of “One House, One Farm”, also known as “Ekti Bari, Ekti Khamar” in Bangali.

One upon a time, this new dimension of the life was out of their imagination while they used to earn their livelihood by working in the lands of the locals. Even, many poverty elimination activities of the government do not reach to them owing to having a gap of information in this regard to the facilities.

This is not an example of stray incidents rather it is presenting the contemporary overall situation of the indigenous people living in the district.

Consequently, the people have started getting benefit from the project adopted by the government particularly for the sake of them in the district.

Under the project, the state authorities supplied one dairy cow and some shits of tin as well as arranged training for them on poultry and vegetable cultivation.

And finally, a cooperatives society has also been developed with the indigenous people so that they can get banking facility from it.

It was learnt from local Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB) that there are more than 166 indigenous families in Bhaloka and Haluaghat upazilas and at least 50 in Dhobaura upazila. All of the family members are hopeful of being solvent with the grace of the project.

In this regard, Kemol Marak said: “I have gotten a new life with the project as there was no hope of being solvent and thought of passing life in the impoverished condition.”

BRDB sources stated that the project of “One House, One Farm” was aimed to help the 300 indigenous families living in the district to develop their financial condition.

When contacted, local MP Dr M Amanullah said the incumbent government has been trying to ensure due public facilities for the indigenous people living there.
