Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said her government had a plan to build a city like Hong Kong at Mawa point near the soon-to-be-built Padma Bridge.
The prime minister said this while holding a meeting with the officials of the communications ministry at the secretariat yesterday, a senior official of the ministry told the Dhaka Tribune over phone.
As a large area near Padma Bridge cannot be used, a city can be built there, the official said quoting the prime minister as saying.
Communications Minister Obaidul Quader and other officials were present at the ministry during her visit.
Hasina said she had a discussion with the finance minister about the urbanisation in the area. She, while speaking to officials at the ministry, also revealed her plan to shift the annual trade fair there.
Another official at the ministry said a presentation of ministry activities was shown to the prime minister.
In a written speech, Sheikh Hasina said Padma Bridge is no more a dream. “I hope Padma Bridge could be opened for people in 2018”.
A total of 19 districts of south-west region of the country will directly be connected with the capital once the Padma is bridged.
The government is building the bridge with its own fund following the withdrawal of the World Bank’s promised $1.2 billion in 2012 citing allegation of corruption.
The prime minister also attended offices at different ministries and urged the officials concerned to expedite activities to deliver services to people.
