1,320MW coal-based power plant to be set up in Patuakhali

The state-owned North-West Power Generation Company Limited and Chinese Power Company CMC signed a Memorandum of Understanding yesterday to set up a large coal-based power plant project with the capacity to generate 1320MW of electricity in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali.

The North-West Power Generation Company’s Managing Director AM Khurshedul Alam and CMC President Wamgs Shelg signed the MoU from their respective sides.

Prime Minister’s Power and Energy Adviser Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Power Secretary Monowar Islam, Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh and senior officials attended the signing ceremony.

Nasrul Hamid said the government had a plan to set up a series of coal-fired power projects to generate 20,000MW of electricity by the year 2030.

“To meet the prevailing demand of electricity, the company has no alternative but to take up joint venture imitative for power generation,” AM Khurshedul Alam of the state-owned power generation company told the Dhaka Tribune.

The Rabnabad river bank near Paira Bandar has been chosen as the project site while the estimated cost of the project is $2 billion.
