Communication Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday said the renovation works of the Gabtoli-Sawarighat roadwould be completed by the end of next May.
The government has allocated Tk14 crore to repair the road, said the minister, while informing the media about the renovation works of the road, which is now in dilapidated condition, during his visit across the embankment of the Buriganga River.
The renovation works would be done by Roads and Highway Division under Communication Ministry.
Earlier, Water Development Board under the Water Resources Ministry was entrusted with maintenance of the road, which may play a vital role in reducing traffic congestion in the city.
“Some portion of the road have been occupied by influential quarters and the grabbed portion will be recovered soon,” said the minister.
Additional Chief Engineer of the RHD Habibul Haque and Executive Engineer Ahsan Uddin Ahmed, among others, accompanied the minister.
Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday ordered the ministers concerned to take initiative for recovering the land from grabbers and constructing the walkway across the embankment of the Buriganga River.
The minister earlier visited the road on September 24, 2012. Then he announced that tender would be floated within next 15 days to upgrade the road into four lanes.
The road has become narrow because of mindless dumping of wastes, especially from Shyambazar wholesale market, on its both sides.
