A total of 425 card holders of Vulnerable Group Development (VGD) at Fulchhari upazila in Gaibandha were unable to celebrate Eid fully as they did not receive the food allocated to them before the festival.
The allotted 30kg of wheat or rice is traditionally distributed among VGD card holders in the last week of the month, but the upazila administration took a decision to disburse food before Eid in the first week of the current month.
Around 12,750 tonnes of wheat were allocated for the 425 card holders of Kanchipara union but the card holders were left empty-handed, waiting for the food on the premises of the union parishad office.
Card holders Marry Begum, Jafi Begum and Rahima Begum said all the beneficiaries went to the UP office several times before Eid but they failed to get their food from UP Chairman Abu Bakar Siddique.
“We were busy distributing VGF rice among the other poor men of the union so they could not disburse wheat of VGD programme duly,” said Abu Bakar Siddique, who offered no response when asked how the chairmen of the six other UPs in the upazila were able to disburse wheat of the VGD programme before Eid.
UNO Mehedi-ul-Sahid, on the issue, said: “The matter would be investigated why (this) UP chairman could not disburse wheat under the programme to the selected poor of the union before Eid,” he said.
