The construction of the Dhaka Bypass Expressway, a pivotal infrastructure project designed to connect Bangladesh's national highways, is expected to be operational by July, 2025.
According to a recent update, over 65% of the construction has already been completed.
Once completed, the bypass will facilitate uninterrupted travel from Joydebpur to Madanpur via a 48-kilometer expressway, bypassing Dhaka. This will be the country's most technologically advanced road.
This update was shared on Thursday during Media Public Day at the CCULB Resort and Convention Hall in the Mirer Bazar area of Gazipur.
Earlier, media representatives were given an on-site tour of various ongoing activities on different parts of the bypass.
They inspected the construction of the K-12 Railway Overpass (Mirer Bazar Flyover) and footpaths.
Later, discussions were held between the Chinese Enterprises Association in Bangladesh (CEAB) and media from China and Bangladesh about areas of interest.
The expressway is being implemented under the Roads and Highways Department’s (RHD) first Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project.
The consortium leading the project includes Sichuan Road and Bridge (Group) Corporation Limited (SRBG), Shamim Enterprise Limited (SEL), and UDC Construction Limited (UDC). The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is serving as the financial advisor for this project.
The Joydebpur-Debgram-Bhulta-Madanpur Road (Dhaka Bypass) PPP project involves expanding the previous two-lane road into a four-lane expressway.
Additionally, there will be two service lanes for local traffic. Travel time along this entire road, which previously took two hours, will be reduced to just half an hour.
The project cost is estimated at Tk3.5 billion.
The road is expected to be open for traffic by July 2025. Upon completion, buses, trucks, and other vehicles will be able to travel easily from the northern and western regions to the southern and eastern regions of the country without entering Dhaka city.
During Media Day, Xiao Zhimin, CEO of Dhaka Bypass Expressway Development Company Limited (DBEDC), said that this expressway will add a new dimension to Bangladesh’s highways. It will provide a safe and comfortable travel experience, improve Dhaka’s traffic network, reduce congestion, and significantly contribute to local economic development once the project is completed.
Xiao mentioned that the project has been listed as a practical cooperation project for the third Belt and Road Forum for international cooperation. This is an example of high-quality collaboration between China and Bangladesh.
At the event, CEAB Vice President Yang Jianxi emphasized the importance of such cooperation between China and Bangladesh under the Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Bangladesh-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor.
He said that member companies will continue to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various fields while contributing to Bangladesh’s social and economic development. The efforts of both countries will contribute to Bangladesh’s socio-economic development and ensure mutual benefits.
