Good news for Gazipur people! They will have a 20 kilometre dedicated road to drive straight to Shahjalal International Airport. However, they will have to wait until 2016 for the pleasant ride to the airport if the project starts and ends on schedule.

Roads and Highways Department yesterday signed an agreement with Australian company SMEC International to supervise implementation Tk 20.4 billion Greater Dhaka Sustainable Urban Transport Project. Bus Rapid Transport between Dhaka airport and Gazipur is a key component of the project which also includes construction of seven flyovers, 4.5 km elevated road, 8-lane Tongi bridge and two bus depots.

RHD chief engineer Aminur Rahman Laskor and SMEC’s top executive Jhon Thorpe signed the agreement on behalf of the respective sides.

Communications Minister Obaidul Quader, who witnessed the signing, said the project includes 20 km Bus Rapid Transit dedicated line from Shahjalal International Airport to Gazipur.

It also includes procurement of 50 articulated buses, improvement of 141 access roads, construction of six markets in Gazipur and walkway, he said.

News agency UNB quoted the minister as saying, “Its works are likely to start soon”.

Under the consultation agreement titled ‘Project Management Coordination and Capacity Building (PMCCB) Pagakge-1’, SMEC as a consult firm will assist in implementation of the project, including monitoring its quality.
