Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said the ultimate goal of her government is to build a country in which everyone has the opportunity to live a decent life—where people do not have to live without food, home, and treatment.
The prime minister said this while inaugurating the 4th Unnyana Mela – Development Fair – via video-conference from her Ganabhaban residence, reports BSS.
National Parliament Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, and Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury were also present at the event.
The premier said: "We will celebrate the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation in 2020, and the golden jubilee of our independence in 2021, when Bangladesh will be a country free from hunger and poverty.
"In 2041 Bangladesh will be a developed nation in South Asia and we are implementing our all plans with this goal."
“We want to make a Bangladesh that will be self-reliant on food, education, intellectuality, and all other areas. The “Delta Plan-2100” has been prepared with this goal to take forward the country, step-by-step, making the development sustainable,” Sheikh Hasina said.
The prime minister's video-conference was connected with four upazilas and premiered in 500 venues across the country—including all districts, upazilas headquarters and union digital centers.
Chief Coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Affairs in the Prime Minister's Office Abul Kalam Azad addressed the occasion and presented a video documentary on Bangladesh’s socioeconomic development of last 10 years, while Principal Secretary Md Nojibur Rahman conducted the function.
After the inauguration, the prime minister talked to:the officials, local public representatives, and beneficiaries of the Ektee Bari Ektee Khamar Project; persons of different professions; and students of Amtali upazila of Barguna district, Fakirhat of Bagerhat district, Lohagara upazila of Narail district and Pirganj of Rangpur district, They exchanged views on development of their areas.
The government has been organizing the Unnyana Mela, for the last four years, to display the government's success on the country's socioeconomic progress and let everyone, especially the young generation, gain knowledge about income generating occupations after completing their studies.
Sheikh Hasina said: "The fair will inspire the youth to build their own future decently keeping them free from militancy, terrorism and other vices. Then they will be able to do something for themselves and the people of the country."
The three-day-long Unnyana Mela was simultaneously held on Dhaka Trade Fair (DTF) ground and many other districts and upazilas across the country.
The prime minister said the people of Bangladesh were unfortunate that their fate was deprived of the opportunity for change,21 years after the murder of Bangabandhu.
She believed that the militaries did nothing to move the country forward except make their own fortunes.
The Awami League government made the country self-reliant in food production after coming to power in 1996, she said, adding that the literacy rate and power generationv increased – while communication systems had been developed across the country – at that time which was the ‘golden era’ for Bangladesh.
However, without the Awami League government in power after the 2001 elections, the pace of development was put in disarray, Sheikh Hasina added.
