Some other major construction works of the project include acquisition of 40.89 hectares of land, construction of 1.92km Nabinagar flyover, reconstruction of 14.28km At-Grade road, construction of 2.72km bridges and 500 metres of overpass/flyover and construction of five toll plazas.
Bridge Division Senior Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam said: “The design was prepared a few years ago and the fund is also in the pipeline. So, there is no more complexities to implement the project.”
The expressway’s original plan depicted it to be 42km long connecting Dhaka airport with National Martyr’s Memorial in Savar via Abdullahpur, Ashulia, Dhaka EPZ and Chandra.
But later, the government decided to reduce the length of Dhaka-Ashulia Elevated Expressway to 24km, saying the original design was no longer necessary.
According to the new plan, the expressway will connect Dhaka airport with Baipile via Ashulia.
The government had initially decided to implement the project under public-private-partnership, but now the project will be under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement. The much-anticipated Dhaka-Ashulia Elevated Expressway finally got the nod from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) on Tuesday.
After the completion of the project, vehicles from northern districts will not have to come across the deadly traffic of Dhaka city on their way to Chittagong. Moreover, the expressway will ease communication between Dhaka EPZ and Chittagong port.
The 24km-long expressway will connect to the four-lane Dhaka-Chittagong Highway.
The total estimated cost of the project is Tk16,901 crore – Tk10,949 crore will be funded by the China Exim Bank and the rest Tk5,951 crore will be funded by the government. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2022.
Chinese firm China National Machinery Export and Import Corporation will supervise the construction of the project.
Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said the project will help reduce the traffic congestion at Abdullahpur-Ashulia, Baipail-Chandra corridors which would eventually ease road communication between the capital and 30 other districts.
The minister made the statement during a press briefing at the Planning Commission on Tuesday.
The project also includes 10.84 kilometres of ramp and 14.28 kilometres of connecting road.
