Annisul seeks Tk500cr for DNCC Bhaban construction

Update : 17 May 2015, 07:35 PM

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Annisul Huq has sought Tk500 crore from the Finance Ministry to construct the city corporation headquarters and implement his other electoral promises.

The newly-elected Dhaka North mayor asked for the fund yesterday when he met with Finance Minister AMA Muhith at the Secretariat in the capital.

“I have assured the Dhaka North mayor that we would help him with the construction of a new building for the DNCC,” Muhith told reporters after the meeting.

Talking to reporters, Annisul said: “The finance minister has always been a mentor to me; I just met him after I took office on May 5 as the mayor of Dhaka North.”

He said the ward councillors had joined their office on May 14.

“We sought funds from the finance minister to construct the DNCC head office as well as to meet the concurrent expenditure of this organisation.

“We have a total of 60 people working on a single floor. That is not enough space to smoothly run the DNCC.”

In reply to a question, Annisul said the DNCC would take stern action against officials and staff who were found to be involved in corruption.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina approved another project, “Construction and Improvement of the Roads, Drains and Footpaths of Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara Diplomatic Areas,” five days ago, with an estimated cost of Tk200 crore.

The project, to be implemented by the DNCC, was placed before the Executive Committee on Economic Council early last month, but the Election Commission objected to the move saying it might affect the city election results.
