The government is yet to bring back Nur Hossain, prime accused in Narayanganj seven murders that took place one year back, from Kolkata, India, while law enforcers have failed to arrest over a dozen other absconding accused in the case.
Ward councillor and suspended Awami League leader Nur is now under trial for illegal entry.
The Detective Branch of police on April 8 submitted the charge sheet in the sensational case accusing 35 people, including Lt Col Tareq Sayeed Mohammad, the sacked chief of RAB 11. Twenty other RAB personnel have also been named in the charge sheet. Of the accused, 13 are now on the run.
A Narayanganj court has set May 11 for hearing on the charge framing matter.
On April 27 last year, Narayanganj City Corporation panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his three associates and driver were abducted from the Fatullah area. At the same time, senior lawyer of the Narayanganj District Judge’s Court Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were also abducted on their way to the capital.
The bodies of six people were recovered from the Shitalakkhya and Dhaleshwari rivers on April 30. The body of Nazrul’s driver Jahangir was recovered from the Shitalakkhya River on May 1.
Two cases were filed in connection with the murders. Nazrul’s wife Selina Islam Beauty filed a case against six people, including former councillor Nur Hossain, while Chandan’s son-in-law Bijoy Kumar Paul filed the other case against some unknown people.
Later, Shahidul Islam, Nazrul’s father-in-law, claimed that RAB officials had killed Nazrul and others in exchange for Tk6 crore from Nur Hossain and other accomplices.
Even though Bijoy is content about the charge sheet, Nazrul’s family members have expressed dissatisfaction as five of the FIR-listed accused were exempted from the charge sheet.
Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Khandakar Muhid Uddin, however, said persons who had minimum involvement with the murder were included in the charge sheet.
Two other sacked RAB officials – Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander SM Masud Rana – have also been named in the charge sheet.
Nur was arrested on June 14 last year along with his aides from an apartment in Kolkata for illegal entry and possession of arms. The government has since been working to bring him back to Bangladesh.
