A drug addict brutally tortured his wife to realise dowry at Shesoil village in Manda upazila on Friday night.
The victim is Mahmuda Bibi, 28, wife of Jalal Hossain, from the village.
She was later admitted to Manda Upazila Health Complex.
Mahmuda told the Dhaka Tribune that she married Jalal in 2004 and her family at the time gave him Tk1.10 lakh as dowry.
Jalal after several years began torturing his wife demanding dowry, centring which there were some arbitrations to settle his demand.
On that night around 9pm, drunken Jalal tied up Mahmuda’s hands and legs, and beat her up mercilessly, asking her to bring Tk10,000 from her father anew.
At one stage, he set lit cigarette on different parts of her body before leaving her in the tied-up condition, Mahmuda went on.
However, she later managed to break the confinement and took shelter one of her neighbours, who admitted her to the hospital.
When contacted, the hospital’s duty doctors Sadia Afrin and Mahbuba Akter as well as local UP member Edris Ali acknowledged the torture on Mahmuda.
